Indian Hospitality
The Stockbridge Mission was sought eagerly by the Iroquois and the astute Mohawk Chief, Hendrick, sent his grandson thither to be educated.
Great was the romantic interest of the Old World in the heathen savages " who dwelt in the midst of Nature." Dr. Ayscourt, Chaplain to the Prince of Wales, sent over a Bible filled with fine engravings, inscribed: presented to Rev. John Sergeant, Missionary to the Stockbridge Indians, in the vast wilderness called New England. Sergeant was ordained, Missionary with impressive ceremonies at Deerfield before the Governor, Council, and Indian Delegates. The occasion was marked by one of the famous ordination addresses of the Rev. William Williams of Hatfield, a cousin of the "Redeemed Captive, " and a son of the cordwayner Robert of Norwich, who crossed in the Rose of Yarmouth and settled In Roxbury.
