Sprawling over 30 km of forested trails and 3,000 lush acres, Notchview is a spectacular example of both the rich, natural resources of Western Massachusetts and the important work done by the Trustees of Reservation. Because of the area's height above sea level (over 2,000 feet), Notchview has remained open with fine skiing as late as April! According to Jim Caffrey, who works for the Trustees, this attribute has been difficult for some skiers to believe, so he suggests skiers contact Notchview before hanging up the boards for the season.

There is a variety of trails for skiers of all levels of experience. Both tourers and skaters alike will find many trails suitable to their own tastes, as well as those hardy snowshoers. Rabbits, deer, bobcat and even black bear populate the many miles. Jim says that many visitors cite the mighty Judge's Hill as the real test of a skier's mettle. At over 2,300 feet, it is the highest point in Windsor and Jim jokes that if it "was much higher, you'd need oxygen!" Though exaggerating somewhat, Jim's comment reminds that Notchview's height can also present somewhat windy conditions; thankfully, this is mitigated by the heavily wooded areas, which cut the effects of the wind.

Like many ski areas, Notchview is offering "Ski Fest" on Sunday January 10th, with all the attendant hoopla of these events. These are primarily designed to get novices fired up about the sport and, in this case, to help present the works and mission of the Trustees. For a small yearly fee, becoming a member assures year-round access to and usage of the Trustees more than 75 properties which stretch across the state, all the way to Martha's Vineyard. In addition, members are secure in the knowledge that they are helping to preserve some of the most important and treasured landmarks in New England.

This year, XC instruction will be available and the Arthur D. Budd Visitors Center provides a cozy spot to "warm and wax." In keeping with the values of the Trustees, no motorized vehicles are permitted (save for Notchview's own ski grooming machines). Nearby overnight accommodations are available.
