Mountain laurel and evergreens line the lovely XC trails of Butternut, lauded in a First Place Award by Ski Magazine for "outstanding environmental planning and excellence in design." According to a recent review, "they make an effort to provide some of the most acclaimed kids' skiing instruction, offering a great ratio of instructors to students, which means there is very individual attention."

Popular with both the downhill and XC skiing crowd, Butternut's trails were hewn by Channing Murdock after he bought the area back in 1962. According to Eric Brooks, people come back to Butternut because of the natural beauty and great conditions, as well as to enjoy the hospitality of the staff, the two lodges and the extensive ski shop. He described December 26-27 as special days, as they feature the NATO/Telemark Clinic, featuring instruction and various package deals on equipment. It's a great way to see for yourself why Ski Magazine called it "a true family mountain."
