Originally called Boston Corners Golf Club, Stansfield was owned and built by Stanley G. Peschel. Prior to this, Boston Corners was essentially a sovereign land for a brief period in the late 1800's. After its secession from the state of Massachusetts and prior to New York's annexation, the area became known as Hell's Acres because it served as a playground for gangsters, gamblers, and horse thieves. A New York state historical marker near the 3rd tee now marks the spot where 3,000 people gathered for the last legal bare-fisted prize fight between Morrissey and Sullivan that lasted an agonizing 37 rounds.

In 1987 Mr. Peschel, a renowned electrical engineer and inventor, (19 U.S. Patents), relieved the pressures of the lab by becoming a heavy equipment operator. Not satisfied with building roads in the mountains on his property, Stanley determined to do something useful and created this magnificent go course.

His choice to craft a golf course was the result of a trip to Scotland. There, he enjoyed golfing so much, he decided to bring a bit of the "Old Course" home. The original course, designed in 1987, has continued to grow and improve making Stansfield, in Stanley's words, "a truly majestic golf course."
