Berkshire Wildlife Sanctuaries In Berkshire County, Massachusetts Audubon Society operates two scenic properties, Pleasant Valley and Canoe Meadows, offering natural history programs year-round to the public.
Pleasant Valley in Lenox encompasses 1,500 acres of forest, brooks, beaver ponds, meadows, and slopes of beautiful Lenox Mountain. The sanctuary’s vast landscape also features a hemlock gorge, a limestone cobble, a hummingbird garden, seven miles of scenic trails, and May-to-October trailside museum.
Canoe Meadows in Pittsfield features 262 acres of fields, wetlands, woods, and croplands bordered by the wildlife-rich Housatonic River. The sanctuary has three miles of nature trails and a small observation building overlooking a beaver wetland.
Visit the Berkshire Sanctuaries to enjoy the natural surroundings and recreational and educational opportunities available, including birding, canoeing, day camps, and organic gardening. Directions:Pleasant Valley - From the Mass Turnpike (I-90) take Exit 2 (Lee), travel north on Route 7/20 for 8 miles to sanctuary entrance.
Canoe Meadows - From the Mass Turnpike (I-90) take Exit 2 (Lee), travel north on Route 7/20 for 8 miles to Holmes Road. Turn right on Holmes Road and proceed 2.2 miles to sanctuary entrance on the right. Canoe Meadows is accessible by public transportation (bus).
Office Hours and Admission FeesPleasant Valley - Grounds are open dawn to dusk, daily, from July to mid-October. The sanctuary is open Tuesday to Sunday, except major holidays, mid-October through June. Free admission for MAS members, general admission $3 for adults and $2 for children and senior citizens.
