For The Record: Art and Artifacts of the American
Family has long been the single most significant element of the American social structure. This exhibition will examine the American family through art and artifacts that provide insight into how relatives were commemorated and remembered and family lines were traced from the eighteenth century through the early twentieth century. Centering on family records, which date back to ancient times and were particularly popular in America from the late eighteenth through the mid-nineteenth centuries, this exhibition will also feature family portraiture, and objects such as furniture and silver that provide insight into how American families conceived of themselves during this period.
