ALL SAINTS EVENSONG
The Parish Choir of Saint Stephen's Church celebrates the Feast
of All Saints with a festival Choral Evensong service
at 3:30 p.m. An offering of music, readings, and prayers, this entirely sung
rite uses 'Elizabethan' English and remains a beloved part of the
Anglican/Episcopal tradition worldwide. Special choral works by Charles
Villiers Stanford (including his Magnificat and Nunc dimittis in G major and
the All Saints festival motet 'Beati quorum via') will commemorate the 150th
birthday of this popular Anglo-Irish composer. The service will conclude
with a complete performance of Mendelssohn's powerful Organ Sonata in F
minor. The psalms will be sung to special Anglican chant settings from the
Short Requiem of H. Walford Davies, and the Preces and Responses to the
famous 17th-century setting of William Smith of Durham. The Rev'd James C.
Dannals, Rector, will officiate and Dr. Daniel B. Page, Director of Music,
will conduct the choir and play the organ.
The Saint Stephen's Parish Choir is the only ensemble in Western
Massachusetts which regularly presents such fully choral services of
Evensong. These seasonal offerings mark rare opportunities to experience
great English and American choral works in their intended context in this
elegant and venerable liturgy. All are welcome to attend without charge or
regard to religious background.
