National Geographic: The Art of Exploration

For more than a century, the National Geographic Society's illustrators have taken readers to places beyond the reach of a camera's lens on journeys of the imagination to destinations that can be seen only through the artist's eye. Vivid and compelling, their images have allowed us to witness the birth of our planet and look forward to the colonization of space - helping us to understand our history and the mysteries of the natural world. Renowned artists N.C. Wyeth, Andrew Wyeth, Charles Knight, Jean-Leon Huens, Tom Lovell, Robert McCall, Pierre Mion, Thornton Oakley, James Gurney and many others are represented in this exciting exhibition celebrating more than one hundred years of National Geographic art.

J.S. Bach's The Passion According to Saint John
In this, his first setting of the Passion story, Bach creates a dramatic, fast-paced setting of the events of John's Gospel in which the role of the chorus as active participants in the drama is thrust to the fore. This performance emphasizes the taut structures and focused rhetoric of the piece by using a limited number of performers. In this intimate arrangement, the emotional directness and dramatic grandeur of the piece are thrown into sharp relief. This performance features a vocal and instrumental ensemble of local and Boston-based professionals, with Rand Reeves as the Evangelist, Keith Kibler as Jesus, Alexander Jones as Pilate, and Richard Giarusso conducting. Admission. 8PM

Ed's paintings are a study in observation - looking at the food we eat and finding artistic inspiration. Whether it's the interesting curves in a piece of bread, the geometry in a slice of pie, or the amorphous shape of a cooking egg, Ed takes a closer look at what others may overlook. "The light striking the edge of a muffin or a mountain has art in it, it's just that we marvel at the mountain but ignore the muffin," says Carson.

Meet the artist at a reception on Sunday, April 9 from 2-4 p.m. For more information call 413-664-8085. Visit Ed's website, www.edcarson.com.
