Tadao Ando: Architect
The winner of the prestigious Pritzker Architecture Prize in 1995 and
the recipient of the 2002 American Institute of Architects Gold Medal,
Tadao Ando is one of the most celebrated architects working today. Masterfully
reconciling the minimalist vocabulary of modern Western architecture and
the environmental sensitivity of Japanese building and garden design,
Ando’s work relates edifice to landscape in a profoundly spiritual
manner. This exhibition, organized by the Saint Louis Art Museum, surveys
Ando’s work of the past thirty years.

Renoir and Algeria
The Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute will present the first ever
exhibition devoted to the Algerian subjects of Pierre Auguste Renoir this
spring. Organized by the Clark, Renoir and Algeria will open at the Institute
February 16, 2003, and will later travel to the Dallas Museum of Art and
the Institut du Monde Arabe, Paris. The exhibition comprises about 15
portraits, landscapes, and genre scenes inspired by the French Impressionist
artist's two trips to Algeria in 1881 and 1882.

A one-of-a-kind
under-water marvel combining the magic of puppetry with powerful accompaniments
of music, dance, and abstract art. Symphonie Fantastique is an intimate
show by puppet master Basil Twist, set to the five movements of Hector
Berlioz's 19th-century classical composition of the same name. The hour-long
Symphonie is performed entirely in a specially constructed water tank.

for portraying the domestic infection of terror and torture during the

Desert Island Pictures: Renoir's Bay of Naples with Vesuvius
In
this lunchtime lecture series, offered on the second Thursday of the month,
curators discuss works in the Clark collection that they would take with
them if "stranded on a desert island." This winter the series
focuses on Renoir in the Mediterranean. In this gallery talk Richard Rand,
senior curator, will discuss Bay of Naples with Vesuvius by Pierre-Auguste
Renoir. Each gallery talk lasts about one half-hour; lunch is available
before or after each talk in the Clark Cafe. The talks are free with gallery

The Haunting of Sherlock Holmes: A lecture presented by Maureen
Corrigan
Reason and irrationality are at battle in many of the Sherlock
Holmes stories. Using The Hound of the Baskervilles as a basis for her
lecture, mystery maven Maureen Corrigan will show how Arthur Conan Doyle's
own strange fascination with spiritualism triumphs in the tale, which
she describes as a "giant boggy metaphor of the human mind."
Corrigan is a book reviewer for National Public Radio's Fresh Air, Assistant
Professor of Literature at Georgetown University, and Associate Editor
of Mystery and Suspense Writers. She also writes for The Washington Post,

Julius S. Held Lecture Series: Mariët Westermann
Mariët Westermann, this year's speaker in the annual series honoring
noted art historian Dr. Julius S. Held, will give two different lectures
on the topic "Performing Forbears: Memory at Work in Seventeenth-Century
Dutch Painting." Westermann is director of the Institute of Fine
Arts at New York University and former associate director of Research
and Academic Programs at the Clark.
On Tuesday, April
15, Westermann will give the lecture "Young Rembrandt and the Lure
of Classical Antiquity." On Wednesday, April 16, she will speak on
"Paradoxes of Jan Steen."

Lecture Series is co-sponsored by the Clark Art Institute and the Williams
