It would be difficult to imagine a more picturesque Christmas than that in downtown Stockbridge, Massachusetts. Legendary illustrator Norman Rockwell called it "the best of America, the best of New England." He captured many quintessential scenes of Americana, but his famed painting, Stockbridge Main Street at Christmas depicting Main Street at Christmastime is unusually evocative and compelling as it portrays a simpler age.

A decade ago, the Town of Stockbridge decided to bring this painting to life, literally. So join them as the Main Street of Stockbridge is transformed into a living, breathing diorama, Sunday afternoon, December 5. Main Street is closed to vehicle traffic, authentic antique cars are put into place. Holiday wreaths and festive lights are positioned as they are in the painting; all at once, the visitor is transported back in time. Ice sculptures glisten, a Silent Auction proceeds, hot soup and cocoa stave off the chill. Roger the Jester and others provide entertainment. Santa and Mrs. Claus lead kids of all ages in singing the timeless carols near their workshop, the shink-shink of sleigh bells are mingled with the snorts of horses and peals of giddy laughter from the assembled apple-cheeked guests. The effect is joyously surreal and serves to offer a real charge to the holiday batteries.

Though Main Street is the centerpiece for these holiday frolics, this is only a part of the fun, according to Barb Zanetti of the Stockbridge Chamber of Commerce. There are numerous events designed for the whole family taking place over the weekend, sponsored by many local businesses, including the Red Lion Inn, the Berkshire Theatre Festival, Chesterwood and the Norman Rockwell Museum. Many events are free of charge or moderately priced, but interested parties should contact the Stockbridge Chamber or view the Chamber'swebsite or details and a downloadable brochure. The organizers and the many participating companies want you to "Come and experience a real old-fashioned Christmas!"
