Beauty, history and culture are hallmarks of the Berkshire Experience. Though perhaps more traditionally known for the autumn and summer activities, Western Massachusetts and the Berkshires in particular - just look at the road signs marking the major routes: "All Roads Lead to the Berkshires" - have become increasingly popular as the locals and the more enlightened visitors have discovered that the Berkshires encompass a year-round lifestyle rich in the sensory stimulus of art and culture.

We have chosen to highlight some of the events happening this winter of 1999 and 2000 in Berkshire County. This is not meant as a comprehensive guide, merely a few signposts on the boulevard of life among the Berkshire Hills. Just as snow covered Mount Greylock was said to have inspired Melville's fictional colossus, so will visitors be inspired by the astounding array of activities and sights for the entire family to enjoy. As technology pervades, so increases the need for the simplicity and inspiration afforded by communities with rich traditions and vital cultures. From the hand-spun Shaker Christmas decorations and luminary walks spiced with the scent of cocoa to the sculpture-like presentations of the Botanical Garden, participants will come to realize that consumerism is but a fraction of the holiday season, that the beauty of basic things and time hallowed ritual do more to honor the better natures of the community. We urge you to look at the web sites listed, to contact the Chambers of Commerce, to simply be a part of the winter time splendor of Berkshire County. Come join us!
