Catamount, is justly known as "a mountain you will remember". Located on
Route 23,straddling both Hillsdale, NY and South Egremont, MA , and
conveniently accessible to Connecticut skiers, Catamount is easy to get
to!
Catamount offers an excellent mix of 26 trails, including several marked
"for experts only", although it appeals to all levels of expertise, day
and night. With Alpine, Cross-Country and snowboarding on over 105
acres, Catamount boasts an outstanding and convenient facility. Some of
the slopes are even being redesigned to better accommodate snowboarding.
The longest of the 25 runs is over 10,000 feet, with a summit elevation
of 2,000 feet and a vertical drop of over 1,000 feet (devotees of the
famous "Catapult" run report the effects of immense g-forces). The
Catapult known as the toughest run in the area invites advanced skiers
and snowboarders for some radical sport.
Visit Catamount for great views of the Berkshires and great skiing and
snowboarding for all. A mix of natural and artificial snow assures a
deep, fast surface. Skiers and snowboarders alike say the unique
location helps "hold" the snow longer than many other mountains. There
are four double chair lifts, a rope tow and a j-bar. Childcare is
available, as are lessons with ample and comfortable lodging in nearby
towns.
Catamount, a family ski area, offers the SKIwee, a nationwide children's
ski and snowboard program. Many other festive Fall and Winter Events
such as the Autumn Leaf Craft Fair and the Annual Ski Swap in October,
the "Some Like It Hot" Chili Contest in January and the Mountain Dew
Vertical Challenge in February, feature fun and great prizes from
sponsors of the events.
Catamount also features a "Night League" for skiers interested in
joining racing teams.
Many people say that they first learned to ski at Catamount and, to
them, "it feels like going home". The ski area is also noted for the
top-notch ski instructors and the meets and competitions, as well as
classes, throughout the season. There is plenty of parking and a short
walk to the lifts.
Catamount opened in 1939, closed for part of WWII. It was purchased in
1973 and is run today by Bill Gilbert, who continues to manage the area.
He proudly notes that they are installing 51 new snow guns, totaling
150! He also reports that over the last five years, Catamount has spent
close to three-quarters of a million dollars upgrading and improving the
snowmaking and will continue to do so in the years to come.
