This 1857 Romanesque church, listed in
the National Register of
Historic Places, had two predecessors on the site. The first, dating
back to 1780, built by pioneers from
Cape Cod, was razed and replaced 20 years later by a larger Colonial
structure which was destroyed by
fire in 1857. The wooden spire is supported by 105 ft. timber frame, the
tallest of its type in the nation.
The Seth Thomas clock is one of only two of its type ever made. The
auditorium is decorated with trompe
l’oeil by two German artists and is regarded as one of the finest
examples of this work.
