Winterhawk Bluegrass Festival August 3-5, 2001 Long Hill Farm Hillsdale, NY 1-860-364-9396 www.Winterhawk2000.com Having been described as "the bluegrass festival against which all others are measured", Winterhawk, now in its Ninth year, changed its location as of last year. You will want to note right away that Winterhawk has changed its location, but not its tradition of celebrating Americana music with bluegrass, Old Time String Bands, Cajun music, Celtic Revival, Zydeco, Western Swing, and commanding Blues and Gospel performances. The new location for Winterhawk is the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival site at Long Hill Farm in Hillsdale, New York. For those who attend both events, finding the event will be easy, otherwise you will want to consult the web site for directions and other details at www.winterhawk2000.com. The name Winterhawk has long been associated with bluegrass music and it continues its tradition on August 3rd, 4th, and 5th, 2000, and is the second year that Winterhawk 2000 - Bluegrass and Beyond- will share the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival for the second year. The revamped festival, with three days of American Musical Roots, Branches and Dance, still has plenty of Bluegrass at its core. Although, along with world class bluegrass performers scheduled on its 4 stages and over 40 acts, this is a festival that celebrates our proud heritage of unique American styles from Old time String Band to Cajun to Celtic Revival to Zydeco to Western Swing to Dixieland, Blues, Gospel, Country, Texas Singer-Songwriters and so much more. The roots of the music featured is multinational and hail from Europe and Africa, but these particular forms of the music were cultivated and reinvented by our ancestors for us to celebrate here in the USA. What better time, as we enter the new millenium to study and appreciate this rich musical legacy. Whether for the first time, or for the Ninth, hear the tradition and drink in the breathtaking view for a true escape and a pleasurable day or weekend. Winterhawk 2001 offers something for everyone. Like its sister festival, Falcon Ridge Folk Festival, which is held the week before on the same site, Winterhawk promises a similar gala 4-stage event. So continuing with an important tradition, this festival is the chance for players of all abilities to learn from some of the greatest names in bluegrass, and allows for some sizzling jam sessions of an unscheduled nature. Who knows what kind of musician you'll run into at one of the many spontaneous jams. Also, there will be dancing all day and all night on 8500 square feet of all-wood floor, and performer workshops, a Family Stage and an Activities 4 Kids area. This is a great place to spend quality time with some of the best people in the world…kids. This festival is also handicapped accessible and ASL-interpreted. With over 40 acres and entertainment on 4 stages, the roster of musicians is an impressive one. Winterhawk offers a taste of Americana for all kinds of musical appetites. The Waybacks and the Tony Furtado Band make their debut with some delicious contemporary bluegrass. Groundbreaking NYC "newgrassers" Tony Trischka with Skyline will join together in a reunion on Saturday. The Hillbilly Jazz stylings of legendary fiddler Vassar Clements with the Little Big Band will entertain on both Man and Dance Stages. 2001 Grammy winners, Alison Brown, the banjo diva that was the winner of the best country instrumental and Dave Alvin, winner in this year's traditional folk category will be there to entertain. Local club favorites, The Joint Chiefs and award-winning Celtic/Bluegrass fusionists, The McKrells, take a turn on 3 of the 4 stages. Singer/songwriter superstars, Greg Brown and Guy Clark make a rare area appearance, and several of the hottest-buzz acts on the acoustic circuit including Stacey Earle, Steve Forbert and Donna the Buffalo will be on hand. Dance up a storm in the 8500 square feet of all-wood floor, under the Dance Tent with Commander Cody and his Lost Planet Airmen who will make your feet sizzle with their Eight to the Bar/Hot Rod Lincoln brand of Rockabilly. Contra and square dance mavens George Marshall with Wild Asparagus will be joined by The Groovemongers and Stillhouse Rounders. Ralph Sweet calls a round of singing square on Saturday afternoon. Louisiana style offerings include Cajun masters Charivari and Zydeco all-stars Geno Delafose and French Rockin' Boogie. Don't forget the family stage, with songs, stories, humor and tall tales. This is a great place for the kids to relax and relate to entertainment of their calibre.
