Arrowhead's Ghostly Tales

What trip to New England would be complete without some good old stories of the supernatural, especially during the eerie Berkshire Autumn, when the early twighlight casts wierd shapes through the changing trees, the evening chill hinting at the howling arrival of bleak Winter? That's just what you can expect at Arrowhead's Ghostly Tales on Monday, October 30th, 2000.

Over the years, there have been some hints of strange goings on at the Old Melville Place, (where one of America's greatest novels, Moby Dick was conceived and written) but this night will belong to the storytellers in the 1850's vintage New England barn where the yarns will be spun. In recent years, when the stories were read in the main house, there were reports of macabre creaking floorboards, lights flashing on and off and odd muffled laughter from “behind the walls.” Brrr!

This year, the stories will be told in the old barn, there will be spooky stories for young and old. Storyteller Mary Murphy will present tales for younger children at 6 p.m., and from 7-9 PM, it's creepy time for the older kids and adults, as some ancient and recent classics of the haunted kind will be cast out on the trembling audience. Last year's event included readings from the ever popular, but scary Edgar Allen Poe's “The Raven” and “The Cask of Amontillado.” Another example of last year's theme was an updated, and reportedly hilariously scary rendition of a Washington Irving classic, but billed as "The Headless Horseman of Paoli". A visit on this night will truly be an experience of the historical Berkshires, where you can use your imagination in the imposing shadows cast by the darkening hills, and soak up the literary ghosts that wander through the classics as they are told.

Guests are encouraged to wear Halloween costumes and there will be an admission fee.
