RED WINES
STELLA MERLOT 1999 ITALY $ 6.99
As the price of California Merlot inches upward, we offer Stella Merlot as the perfect alternative. Grown in the hills of Umbria and crafted by famed winemaker Riccardo Cotarella, this Merlot is deep ruby red in color with fresh fruit aromas. Full, ripe fruit on the palate is balanced by soft, smooth tannins. A recent Wine Spectator "Best Buy" - they wrote, "The wine is a round, tasty, creamy-textured Merlot offering notes of berry fruit, roasted coffee and dried herbs." A GREAT RED for before dinner or with a meal featuring lightly grilled meats.
PEPPERWOOD GROVE SYRAH 1999 CALIFORNIA $7.99
Pepperwood Grove winery is becoming one of the best kept secrets in the wine industry. Committed to quality and pure varietal character, they have recently released a new varietal 'Syrah', and it is a real hit! Spicy black cherry and pepper notes mingle throughout with pleasant earthy flavors and soft tannins. Rated a Wine Spectator "Best Buy", this is easy drinking red to accompany grilled burgers or take-out pizza.
CODICE SPANISH RED 1998 SPAIN $ 7.99
What a perfect summer red! Grown on the illsides of Rioja Alta and made from 100% Tempranillo grapes, this wine is both subtle and surprisingly complex. The ripe berry aromas are followed by nuances of cherry, plum, earth and spice with just a hint of oak for a smooth, dry finish. With the help of one of the finest importers of Spanish wines, Jorge Ordonez, this winery has emerged to the forefront of Spanish producers over the last 10 years. This wine could almost be thought of as the Spanish equivalent to Pinot Noir. It is earthy, ripe and smooth but with depth and finesse. Enjoy by itself or with light meats, vegetables and cheeses.
BOIS DU RENARD SYRAH 1998 FRANCE $ 8.99
Southern France is, with good reason, the fastest growing wine region in all of France. The wines produced here are often top quality and tremendous values. This Syrah, grown in the Languedoc region, represents the hand- crafted quality of a small "Domaine", employing the newest technology in viticulture and wine making. Winemaker Michael Goundrey, draws upon his years of Australian winemaking experience to produce wines of intense varietal character, while capturing the subtleties of flavor and spice unique to the Languedoc. The wine displays a deep, purple color and youthful fruit aromas that are complemented by traditional spice and blackberry overtones. On the palate, the flavors of ripe blackberry and cherry notes are balanced by soft tannins and subtle oak influences. As Michael Goundrey, says ' the wines of Bois du Renard are intended to be shared and enjoyed, not pondered.' Viva La France!
HARDY'S 'NOTTAGE HILL' CABERNET/SHIRAZ 1999AUSTRALIA $9.99
Originally known in this country for a great variety of inexpensive wines, Thomas Hardy & Sons have recently introduced a medium-priced tier of wines call 'Nottaqe Hill'. It may sound strange, but my wife and I discovered this wine on a recent trip to Ireland. On several occasions Diane and I were thrilled by its delicious flavors and balance. Made from specially selected parcels of premium Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz fruit, and partially matured in oak casks for 12 months, the result is a succulent, dry red which displays rich, soft fruit characters of black currant, plum and chocolate with a hint of pepper in the finish. This easy drinker can be enjoyed on its own and is particularly well suited to roasts, casseroles, grilled meats or chicken.
TERRILOGIO 1997 ITALY $ 9.99
You've heard that the 1997 Tuscan vintage was good, and Terrilogio is an example of just how good! A 'Super-Tuscan' blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese, exhibiting an intricate nose of smoke and jam followed by layers of black fruit, plum and leather finishing with rich, lingering flavors. This wine has been a big hit at many recent functions, including our own Jim Farr's wedding at Seven Hills. We've already blown through 50 cases this Spring, and we have restocked to make sure we have enough for the busy Summer months. This wine is ideal with grilled flavors of lamb, steak or duck. Enjoy a bit of Tuscany right in your own backyard.
IL CAVALIERE CHIANTI RUFINA RISERVA 1997 ITALY $10.99
When most people think of Chianti., they think Chianti 'Classico'., the largest area of Chianti production. However., just to the South, the lesser known area called Rufina, produces some of the best value Chiantis in all of Tuscany. Il Cavaliere, which means 'The Gentleman', is a clean, delicious example of the drive and refinement for which the wines of the high, cool district of Rufina is celebrated. This wine is dry and bright with Pronounced suggestions of black cherries, earth, raisin and leather. This traditional Chianti with complex flavors of fruit and earth is a perfect match with cheeses, pasta and chicken dishes.
SANTA RITA RESERVE MERLOT 2000 CHILE $10.99
We chose this wine as the value stand-out in a room with over 200 others at one of the many Tasting Events we attend. Merlot grapes grown in the hillside vineyards of the Maipo Valley ( Chile's top rated region) mature slowly yielding a wine with concentrated flavor and aroma, soft tannin and deep color. The bouquet of berry, pepper and herb is followed by complex flavors of blackberry, cherry and vanilla with just a hint of eucalyptus from the minerals in the soil. This stunning example shows just how good and intricate Merlot can be at this price. We loved this wine so much, we put it in both our Chilean and California Merlot sections. People have come back ravine about the quality of this great alternative to California Merlot. A must try!
