![]() The Mission House Stockbridge, Massachusetts John Sergeant, first missionary to the Stockbridge Indians, built this simple frame house for his bride, Abigail, in 1739. According to legend, its striking Connecticut doorway was brought to Stockbridge by ox-team over a wilderness trail. Moved to its present site in 1928 and restored, the Mission House is filled with period furnishings, including a bookcase and chairs belonging to Sergeant. In the colonial garden surrounding the house grow herbs and bright perennials. We invite you to visit the Mission House. Set serenely on the Main Street of Stockbridge, it tells the remarkable story of Reverend John Sergeant, true friend of the Stockbridge Indian tribe.
