V. SERVICES WITH INDIRECT TIES TO COUNTY GOVERNMENT

D. BERKSHIRE HAZARDOUS MATERIALS TEAM

The Berkshire County Hazardous Materials Team was initially sponsored by the County. A hazardous materials vehicle was furnished and refurbished by the County. It is, however, no longer used by the Team. The Team is now wholly funded, supported, and supervised by the State, which recently provided it with two new trucks. Both trucks are housed in the Pittsfield Central Fire Station, where the Team is based.

The Team is staffed by 28 firefighters in Pittsfield and 10 in North Adams, all of whom have special hazardous materials training. The Team Leader is Andrew Stephenson. The Team usually responds to about four to eight calls a year. Typically a local fire department is first called to these situations and then the Hazardous Materials Team is called, if that is deemed necessary.
