V. SERVICES WITH INDIRECT TIES TO COUNTY GOVERNMENT

C. BERKSHIRE COUNTY SCUBA TEAM

In 1990 the Berkshire County Commission formed a County Scuba Team. Its purpose was to provide a regional resource of scuba diving services to towns and cities throughout Berkshire County. The current director of this organization is Bob Lamb. It is staffed by approximately five volunteers who receive absolutely no compensation or reimbursement for expenses. The County Commissioners no longer provide direct or indirect supervision, management, or support to this organization.

The Scuba Team receives approximately seven to twelve calls a year for its services. These are usually required on an emergency basis. The lack, however, of any funding for this organization and the small number of geographically diverse members prevents it from effectively and quickly serving all Berkshire towns and cities on an emergency basis. Additional funding is needed to enhance the communications infrastructure through the provision of beepers or cellular phones. This will allow for quicker responses to calls. It should be noted that the Pittsfield and Lanesborough fire departments have their own Scuba divers who are also employed as firefighters.
