Report on Existing County Service

III. SERVICES FOR WHICH THE COUNTY PLAYS AN ACTIVE ROLE

IV. SERVICES THAT ARE TO BE ASSUMED BY THE STATE

Substantial County resources are spent maintaining and managing a number of County owned buildings and managing some of the services associated with those buildings. Three of these buildings are the Silvio O. Conte Superior Court House, the District Court House, and the Boyes Building (the "Old Athenaeum," which houses the Probate Court, the Registry of Deeds, and the University of Massachusetts Extension Service). For these buildings the County employs a staff of six custodians.

In relation to the Registry of Deeds and County Jail/House of Correction, the County oversees personnel and budge appropriations and expenditures.

The County Treasurer' Office is located in the Superior Court House. The Treasurer' Office is responsible for receipts and expenditures of all County departments, including the House of Correction and Registries. It maintains all books and records pertaining to each and every transaction, and monitors each department' budget. It also handles weekly payroll for all County employees.

Under current State legislation pertaining to the future of Berkshire County, the Treasurer' staff will be eliminated on June 30, 2000. The Treasurer' term of office will continue until December 31, 2001. The other management services discussed above in this section are to be assumed by the State, according to State legislation.
