Report on Existing County Service

I. INTRODUCTION

With the State's legislative mandate to dissolve Berkshire County Government by July 1, 2000, Berkshire County's state legislators requested the Berkshire Regional Planning Commission to assemble a group of regional leaders and officials to investigate and resolve issues arising from the dissolution. In response, the Berkshire 2000 Task Force was created. Members of the Task Force are selectpeople, mayors, and business leaders who were chosen from diverse regions of the County.

The Task Force concluded that as part of its responsibilities it is important to understand more fully the present nature, status, and usage of existing County services. That is the focus of this report. The report is based on a variety of information sources, including interviews with County officials, managers, and citizens and review of documents and files.
