The acceptance of B&Bs on this side of the ocean came just as my husband and I were
discovering the joys of bicycling from B&B to B&B, from one interesting experience to another, in
what is now a total of fourteen states and seven countries. Fourteen B&B books and thousands of
interviews later, this latest edition reflects the wide spectrum of possibilities—everything from a
home away from home to a picture–perfect restoration—with hosts who range from
twentysomething to "almost eighty now." Although some B&Bs have expanded (and been
grandfathered into this book), generally the places selected fit into my original interpretation of bed
and breakfast: a maximum of about ten guest rooms; common room provided; breakfast included
in the rate, but no public restaurant or bar on the premises; owner/innkeeper as host. Among the
"exclusives"—very small B&Bs you will find in no other book—are some pioneers who were in
my very first B&B book, Bed and Breakfast in the Northeast, published in the early 1980s, when
there weren't enough B&Bs in New England to fill a book!
